    Two Points East

    £14.99

    Description
    Hardback book

    Dimensions
    21 x 15cm x 1.8cm spine

    About the Book
Have you ever wondered just what was the Hanseatic League? Or what exactly is the difference between a kipper and a bloater? How do you make malt and how do eels get to the Sargasso Sea to breed? The answers to some of these questions can be found in this engaging new book.

Spanning the period from the Anglo-Saxons to the coming of the railway, it is about the boats, the fishing and some of the lives lived on the North Sea coast of Norfolk, from the once world famous herring fishery in Great Yarmouth to the extraordinary rescues of Cromer’s famous lifeboatman Henry Blogg.

Illustrated throughout with the author’s sketches, painted maps add clarity to the text and red herrings appear all through the pages flagging up interesting facts and generally looking cheerful.

    More about Judith Ellis
The author of this fine-looking and idiosyncratic illustrated book on the history of maritime Norfolk is an Aylsham-based bookbinder. She self-published a very limited edition of the book last year and has been persuaded by positive feedback to produce a new edition in a larger print run.  It has been shortlsited for the East Anglian Book Awards 2017.

    More about Ruth
Ruth studied Fine Art, specialising in sculpture and over the years has shifted to painting and illustration in her work. Paper cutting has come more recently and has initiated a wide range of commissioned and private work.

For Ruth the intrigue of a paper cut is in starting with a blank paper and carefully, intricately removing bits of it to make a picture. She starts with a minimum of material and rather than adding and adding pencil, pen, ink, paint, she carefully cuts into the sheet by hand, extracting an image from exploiting positive and negative space.

The alphabets are a sorting activity; a means of inclusion and exclusion (and forcing variety). Just as deciding what to cut away and what to leave are intrinsic to making these images work. Ruth lives and works in the heart of the beautiful Norwich Lanes in Norfolk

Frame: Hand framed in Norfolk, Obeche wood, white painted, bug proof.

    Background Information
Long ago, when I first saw Belinda I straight away fell in love with her. She was the name and brand character of a cigarette brand called ‘Belinda’ in Holland in the 70s and she was pictured on both sides of the package. The ‘menthol’ taste was very popular amongst women (menthol was advertised as ‘lighter’ and ‘healthier’ than normal cigarettes). The brand doesn’t exist anymore. I brought Belinda back via this screen print.

    Andrea Girling

    1842–2017 – Concertina Book

    £45.00

    Description
Concertina Book - handmade, hand printed book

    Dimensions

5.5 x 12.7cm when closed (inner opens flat to approx. 40cm)

    Materials
Limited edition prints, hand tooled into a concertina fold, housed in hard back cover.

Instead of conventional pages the concertina book houses an expandable paper concertina with a digital drawing depicting a photographically negative reproduction of an imagined romantic landscape reproduced in black and white. The result is a ghostly image of mountain pinnacles and valley walls, with windows of positive landscape, viewed across the expanded extent of the concertina.

The concertina format presents the area of Andrea's appreciation of the romantic landscape tradition and where this meets with early optics and more recent developments in digital technology.

Andrea's approach to her work in her own words
'In the digital age there are anxieties and concerns relating to the encroachment of technology and its impact on social change. I am interested in the parallels between what we are experiencing now, with the Romantic period of the 18th to mid 19th century when society was going through similar changes in relation to technology.

My research is a process-led (thinking through making) enquiry into the relationships and dualities of the fast and slow, machine and handmade, digital and analogue. I am particularly interested in exploring these dualities by pushing the boundaries of drawing through experimentation and utilisation of both traditional and technological mediums'

After a twenty-five year career in London as a fashion designer she moved to North Norfolk in 2003. Carolyn’s background in sculpture, her love of natural form and the close proximity of the beach led her to indulge a childhood interest in shell collecting. Shells with their accidental beauty, subtle colours, variety in shape and texture appealed to her. Their endless ornamental possibilities have inspired her recent shell work of elaborately decorative objects, which are as exquisitely beautiful, intricate and unique as the shells themselves.
