    Andrea Girling

    1842–2017 – Concertina Book

    £45.00

    Description
Concertina Book - handmade, hand printed book

    Dimensions

5.5 x 12.7cm when closed (inner opens flat to approx. 40cm)

    Materials
Limited edition prints, hand tooled into a concertina fold, housed in hard back cover.

Instead of conventional pages the concertina book houses an expandable paper concertina with a digital drawing depicting a photographically negative reproduction of an imagined romantic landscape reproduced in black and white. The result is a ghostly image of mountain pinnacles and valley walls, with windows of positive landscape, viewed across the expanded extent of the concertina.

The concertina format presents the area of Andrea's appreciation of the romantic landscape tradition and where this meets with early optics and more recent developments in digital technology.

Andrea's approach to her work in her own words
'In the digital age there are anxieties and concerns relating to the encroachment of technology and its impact on social change. I am interested in the parallels between what we are experiencing now, with the Romantic period of the 18th to mid 19th century when society was going through similar changes in relation to technology.

My research is a process-led (thinking through making) enquiry into the relationships and dualities of the fast and slow, machine and handmade, digital and analogue. I am particularly interested in exploring these dualities by pushing the boundaries of drawing through experimentation and utilisation of both traditional and technological mediums'

    More about Ruth
Ruth studied Fine Art, specialising in sculpture and over the years has shifted to painting and illustration in her work. Paper cutting has come more recently and has initiated a wide range of commissioned and private work.

For Ruth the intrigue of a paper cut is in starting with a blank paper and carefully, intricately removing bits of it to make a picture. She starts with a minimum of material and rather than adding and adding pencil, pen, ink, paint, she carefully cuts into the sheet by hand, extracting an image from exploiting positive and negative space.

The alphabets are a sorting activity; a means of inclusion and exclusion (and forcing variety). Just as deciding what to cut away and what to leave are intrinsic to making these images work. Ruth lives and works in the heart of the beautiful Norwich Lanes in Norfolk

    Background Information
Long ago, when I first saw Belinda I straight away fell in love with her. She was the name and brand character of a cigarette brand called ‘Belinda’ in Holland in the 70s and she was pictured on both sides of the package. The ‘menthol’ taste was very popular amongst women (menthol was advertised as ‘lighter’ and ‘healthier’ than normal cigarettes). The brand doesn’t exist anymore. I brought Belinda back via this screen print.

    Description
Hand painted paper concertina bound book

    Dimensions
    18.5 x 7cm when closed and 18.5 x 30cm long when opened up

    Materials
Unfastening a Japanese bone clasp releases the painted paper birds, which seem to fly across the sea or over rooftops.

    More about Judith Ellis
Judith Ellis's Birdflight series is her own development of the flag book and combines a love of drawing with her lifelong interest in the natural world. In her former life as a vet she often had to handle birds and was always moved by the lightness of their being. It is as though a bird has only just materialised and lives only partly in this world.

Oystercatchers fly along a beach, and Swifts swoop over rooftops. Gannets fly fast over the sea and Redshanks call over the marshes. The Birdflight series of artistʼs books can each be made to commission, they are all individually hand painted no two will ever be quite the same.

The completed drawing is reproduced as a Giclée print. This is a digital printing process combining pigment based inks with high quality archival quality paper to achieve an inkjet print of superior archival quality, light fastness and stability. Louisa's etchings are inspired by the natural world and her curiosity about what lies beneath the surface: energy, shapes, forms, colours and layers. She explores the mysterious places that are beyond our visual plain; the depths of the sea, the roots of the earth, outer space and the continuous cycle of energy which connects them all.

Since graduating from Camberwell College of Arts in 2006 Louisa has created bespoke illustrations for Vogue, Tatler, The Spectator, Paul Smith and her work is now in the Collection of the V&A. She has also worked on a variety of other private commissions – children’s clothing designs, maps and wedding/ party invitations

It was here that she discovered and learned about printmaking, specialising in screen print and lino cut. Description
Paper cut designed for London Design Festival 2016

    Dimensions
    Framed in acrylic perspex 85 x 85cm

    Materials
Trace paper, hand cut paper cuts
