Background Information
Tinbergen constructed an artificial stimulus consisting of a red knitting needle with three white bands painted around it. The needle elicited a stronger response from a Herring Gull's chick than the actual beak of the parent gull (yellow with a red spot). He defined the Supernormal Stimulus as "Something which excites instinct stronger than its natural variant". Supernormal Stimuli occur frequently in our modern human lives. Red lipstick, the soft fur and big eyes of a teddy bear, but also, artificial colors, tastes and fragrances in our food, or for example the 'never a rejection' worlds of Facebook and Tinder, are pulling with full power on our senses.

Tinbergen's Needle is originally designed for multidisciplinary project De Meeuwen van Tinbergen by theatre collective Cowboy bij Nacht.
